about

Skin speaks directly to a former partner after discovering a betrayal. It is the conversation the artist wishes she could have had with that person.

Skin forms the second part in the trilogy of songs tracing the processing of betrayal, following the journey of the artist rebuilding herself.

Skin starts with a simple drum machine beat which carries the song throughout and acts as the foundation to the rest of the track - it is the constant that Naomi was holding onto while navigating huge changes in her life. The heavy synths, western-inspired guitars and bass build on this, reflecting the darkness in the song, building to the chorus led by a saw that appears like someone crying out. Naomi repeats over again: “I don’t want those years back from you” – it’s an acceptance of what happened, and a foundation she’s built in order to move on.

lyrics

The first time I felt another one’s skin
I wondered what I’d been missing
While this whole time you’d been feeling other women

It’s amazing how easy it can be
To be made to feel as good as you know that I should
So why did you leave me so long without the touch of someone

Was I too ugly, too pretty or too small
Was I too much or too little of a whore
In your eyes we’re all the same it’s always the woman to blame

Keep your memories and I’ll take your regrets
That is all I need to get by
I’m just so happy you are no longer in my life

I don’t want those years back from you.
